Hello.

It's almost the new year, again. It seems like 2009 is really short, or have I been dreaming, or gone somewhere out of this universe, been sleeping too long than usual ? But anyway, it's short. I am kind of excited with the new year, since it's a new decade. Au revoir, and so long the noughties ! It has been a great decade. I have spent more than half of it away from home. But then again, I am home. This is my home for now.

I could have been one of the stranded people onboard that Eurostar, down that channel tunnel. But after I bought the ticket, thinking, I can only spend a day shopping in Paris and it might not be worth it after all since it's also the weekend before Xmas, I sold the ticket to a colleague. It's a typical monday morning, not so typical actually since I have just spent some really "quality time" deleting unrelated stupid spam or viruses whatsoever on my Facebook and not even halfway through I just got really fed up, so I deactivated my account.

Wooohh! I am feeling much better now. Really, really.

Honestly I'm not bothered.

Deactivating that account is only temporary. I will still have my account when I log in again. Not so soon, that's for sure. So I guess for the time being without Facebook, I'll be here, or there.

So it's that time of the year again. This year, as usual, we have not done anything much apart from the unmissable kuah kacang, rendang daging and nasik impit. Also this year I baked some cupcakes that the recipe I took from the Hummingbird bakery book I just bought few days ago. Made the red velvet cakes. I guess it's about time to try them at home myself after dozens of pilgrimages to the bakery in Portobello Road, never been to the one in Old Brompton Road though.

I just hope that I'll make full use of the book, since the first batch of red velvet was a success.

I received two deliveries this morning. First to arrive was a new mobile I ordered from Amazon. To tell the truth, that's my second mobile after being here for nearly five years. I was kinda excited when I got the package. I took out the phone, read some important notes from the manual, then charged it, tested it out.

After a few minutes with the phone, another knock on the door and there's another delivery for me, from Amazon too but this time it's a box with few books I just ordered two days ago. Immediately, I got bored of my new mobile and instead took out one of the books from the box and got carried away.

Hmmm...

I can't sleep much while traveling. So, while on the train from Vienna to Prague, I read my copy of Lonely Planet:Prague and was looking for nice places to eat while in the city. That was before I accidentally left the book on the train seat while we were busy with luggages. Yes, I am very forgetful thank you very much. There, about £6 down the drain.

The next day, we walked up the hill near the castle, very excited to the Indonesian restaurant, Sate, I read from the book the night before. What we didn't expect was the waitress, obviously a Czech, spoke bahasa Indonesia. Later we know, her mother is Indonesian and married to a Czech. She was born and raised in Prague, and she speaks Indonesian with her mother.

Food. We ordered sambal tauhu, sup jawa, soto vegetarian, nasi goreng, mee goreng, sambal oelek, opor tauhu or equivalent to tauhu masak lemak, teh ais, and few more I think but I can't recall. Very simple dishes they were but I was happy all day long because of those.

I was born in the 80s. It was the time when VCR was dominating the entertainment unit. It was the time when all I did at home was watching Mind Your Language until the videotape and the whole class of Mr Brown went all wrong. It was when the A-Team series was a major hit, I think. Not to forget MacGuyver and Airwolf. I watched the Sound of Music and Mary Poppins numerous times till I remember lyrics of them songs. That's why I can't wait to watch them on the big screen for the 30th anniversary of the Sound of Music. That's coming soon.

Ah, the 80s. What else. Oooh. The Transformers was on tv that decade too. Not to forget the Knight Rider, The Quantum Leap.

I was a young kid. Everyday, after coming back from school, all I could think was the tv. Watching The Smurfs, Care Bears, He-Man, GI Joe, Charlie Brown, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Ninja Turtles, Thundercats. You name it. During bulan puasa, I remember this series Naik Tangga Turun Tangga, or was that during the 90s I can't remember.

While riding the yellow bus to school, the abang or pakcik driver would listen to Search or Wings or some other malay rock groups. Most importantly, the MILO dalam van at school. The best milo ice in the world!

Gue ketemuk sudara gue di Amsterdam. Kecil bukan dunia nih? Saudaranya ramai di Johor Bahru dan Singapore, malahan rupanya mirip datukku di kampung. Kaget! Dianya punya status yang ngak jelas hidup di perantauan.

Ramadhan is just around the corner. People are now talking about baju raya, kain for baju raya, bookings for kuih and biskut raya. But the first thing that came in to my mind was dah habis ganti puasa ke belum. Mmm.

Since Yahoo Photos is closing this coming Spet 20th, I have to transfer all my photos to my Flickr account. Mind you, I have not been to my Yahoo photos for almost three years . Kalau itu almari in this real world, dah berhabuk. But, it's good though. It works juts like a time capsule.

The great Sheffield flood 2007

As usual, the BBC news got carried away, hence the title.

It was the day we got back in Sheffield from Florence and rasa terluluhawa. Italy was 36C and Sheffield freaking 10C. Nasib baik ada jaket with us that time. Seems like we have predicted how bad British weather could get, or I am simply a psychic. Joy.

Rumah kami agak tinggi dan berbukit, jadi tiada masalah. But some other parts were badly affected.

Hope the trains will be back on track with the schedule this weekend. Or else I will not be able to go Bartfest-ing.

Oh ok. Torino best mainly because of their super excellent gelatos and no one speaks inglese. Phrasebook was our bestfriend there. Their gelatos are far, far better than in Florence, even better than Rome. Far cheaper too. Really.

Firenze, superb. Excellent lah.. But too touristy and almost everyone speaks inglese. Hoh except makcik at the Pisa airport self serve till. Polizia kacak belaka.

Coffee for €0.90 a cup. Murah gila, kaw-kaw pulak tu. Had few cups in one day.

Pasta a Roma

I still remember when the first time we had dinner in Rome. It was near Vatican, and the pasta sungguh tak sedap. Later we read in a travel book to avoid anything near the Vatican, simply because they're too expensive and tak sedap. Rasa macam makan straight from sauce dalam botol.

Then the next day, we went to this restaurant near Via Del Corso, and voila! Superb pasta, pizza, dessert semua superb. I had that seafood pasta, the best I've had in years.

There's this one makcik I often saw on the bus 52. A very typical middle age office-lady-like one that you will normally think she's a housewife, with lots of kids, that loves to gossip (or loves to bake kuih at the office's small kitchen and goes for tea like forever).

After weeks, today we finally talked. She's no ordinary makcik. She's a genetic engineer.
